Shotton Mill Takes £1BN Transformation Story to Parliament

Shotton Mill Limited was a participant at a highly productive and strategic event at the Houses of Parliament, hosted by the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI). The showcase highlighted the paper industry’s fundamental role in the UK’s circular economy and the massive economic significance of the redevelopment taking place at our facility in Flintshire.

The event was a fantastic success, providing a platform to share firsthand the ambitious scale and progress of our investment. Our team, led by Daniel Johnson, Jackie Pearson, and Robbie Warden, was honoured to be joined by The Rt. Hon the Lord Barry Jones, a staunch advocate for the region, to brief him on the latest developments.

Advanced Manufacturing Paper Campus Nearing Start-Up

The £1BN+ investment in Shotton Mill is rapidly progressing toward start-up, positioning the site to host the UK’s largest recycled paper manufacturing line and one of the most technologically advanced paper campuses in Europe.

This monumental project, underscores a commitment to environmental stewardship and will see the site pivot from its newsprint heritage to producing high-quality containerboard (PM3) exclusively using 100% recycled paper and together with tissue manufacturing (TM1).

The project’s impact is transformative:

  • Circular Economy Leadership : The new plant will process approximately 830,000 tonnes of recovered fibre, transforming the UK from a net importer to a net exporter of containerboard.
  • Sustainable Technology : The site will feature state of the art paper machines and advanced solutions like anaerobic digestion and a hydrogen-enabled Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant, that together with the existing biomass CHP will be capable of supporting energy self-sufficiency from on site assets.
  • Economic Opportunity : The investment creates and secures 400+ advanced manufacturing positions, providing a generational opportunity for local talent.
This initiative is a powerful tribute to the rich industrial heritage of our region. The team at Shotton Mill is proud to be at the forefront of this industrial renaissance. North Wales is truly the place to be, and paper is the business to be in!
