Shotton Mill Project Achieves Key Milestone with Pipeline Approval

The Shotton Mill redevelopment project is delighted with Flintshire Council's approval of the planning application for an essential high pressure natural gas pipeline. This crucial infrastructure, connecting a pressure reduction station at the Weighbridge Road site, marks a pivotal step forward in the site's transformation into a state-of-the-art facility.

The approved underground pipeline will play a central role in supporting the development of the 20% hydrogen-enabled Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant. This advancement, alongside the site's existing renewable power generation capabilities, reinforces the project's ambition to achieve 100% self-sufficiency with over than 90% efficient steam and power generation from on-site assets.

"This approval is a testament to the thorough planning and collaborative effort that has gone into the Shotton Mill redevelopment," stated Dan Johnson, General Manager. "The pipeline is not just a piece of infrastructure; it's a vital link that will enable us to realize our vision of a sustainable and efficient energy hub."

The Council's decision, issued on March 6th, was made without objections from statutory bodies, highlighting the project's alignment with local priorities and environmental standards. The careful consideration of the pipeline's route, reduction station and construction methods ensured minimal disruption and environmental impact. The underground installation will preserve the site's aesthetics and minimize surface disturbance.

Specifically, the pipeline will be constructed using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and Stainless-steel materials, selected for their durability and resistance to corrosion, ensuring a long-lasting and reliable infrastructure. Furthermore, the pipeline’s design incorporates advanced leak detection systems, ensuring the highest safety and environmental standards.

This approval builds upon the comprehensive 2022 planning permission for the 85-hectare redevelopment, demonstrating the project's steady progress and commitment to its long-term goals.

"We are thrilled to be moving forward with this critical phase of the project," added Dan Johnson, General Manager. "We are committed to keeping the community informed and engaged as we continue to develop the Shotton Mill site."

The Shotton Mill redevelopment project aims to transform the former paper mill site into a modern, sustainable energy and industrial hub. The project emphasizes renewable energy generation and innovative infrastructure solutions.
